Liam Gallagher Looks Boxy and Awkward

Photo: Stuart Wilson/Getty Images

Liam Gallagher, who used to be in Oasis and now designs a bland clothing line called Pretty Green, attended a Levi's event in London last night with his hair long and glossy and his torso tent jacket long and boxy.

What do you think of his sartorial proportions?

We'd like to join Liam in wishing you a peaceful and joyous holiday weekend. We're scooting off early today so we can start enjoying it, but will be back to our regular blogging schedule on Tuesday. Kisses, bitches!

Project Runway Recap: Avocado Goiters and One Sweet Peach

After Tim Gunn's epic outburst last week, there was no way that this episode could possibly measure up. Really, what's the point in even watching the show anymore? Never before and never again in Project Runway history will there be a Tim-sponsored takedown of such monumental proportions. It's as if the reality-TV heavens parted, and a clip so juicy, and filled with such hot rage that not even JWOWW smacking Sammi in the face a few networks away, could dilute its unadulterated genius.

But okay, we're over it. This week's challenge was one of the dreaded "real model" challenges — you know, the kind where all of the designers stare aghast, as if they've just been asked to sew a bikini for an army tanker with one hand tied behind their backs. The specific challenge is to create a fashionable look from an unfashionable bridesmaid's dress. And out comes the parade of blush, periwinkle, and fuchsia monstrosities, all blinding satin and titanic bows. Casanova, who is but a footnote in this episode, gets to pick his model first, and goes for a "tall, skinny, stylish" girl, because, obviously, he wants to challenge himself. The rest of the designers divvy up their girls, and then it's off to Mood. April's model is turning out to be fussy and demanding, but she's had it up to here and starts mouthing back. (Where do they find these volunteers anyway? We'd like to think that if we were getting a free dress made on Project Runway, we'd wear a garbage bag with glee.) Michael D., meanwhile, is being goaded by the PR producers and other contestants to make an issue out of his girl's size (what, a 10/12? Please). Being the total gentleman, Michael D. refuses to engage them, saying only "I think she has a wicked-curvaceous body" and leaving it at that.

Exclusive Video: See Alexandre Herchcovitch Draw His Spring 2011 Collection

When a full-fledged collection springs forth on a runway, it's hard to believe that just a few months earlier, every stitch was a mere figment of the designer's imagination. This video of Alexandre Herchcovitch shows the humble, pen-to-paper beginnings of his forthcoming spring 2011 collection, in all of its eraser-rubbed glory. Watching the designs evolve under Herchcovitch's pencil tip is kind of like watching a baby try to walk: a little bit painful, totally fascinating, and definitely applause-worthy.

When Working at Goldman Sachs Gets You Down, Make Jewelry With an Ancient Woolly Mammoth Tusk

Meet Monique.

Monique Péan graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in '03, but she didn't really know what she wanted to do with her life, so she did what many bright, overachieving, unsure Ivy League grads do, and took a job as an analyst at Goldman Sachs. She arrived at work every day by 5:30 a.m., and slogged on for two years before a terrible tragedy befell her: Her sister was killed in a car accident. Now, the need for a hobby, for a distraction from the corporate money hungriness of it all, the need to feel something for one's work, was greater than ever. So Péan did what any young woman with lots of money in her bank account and an eye for beauty would do, and spent $30,000 of her savings on a fossilized woolly mammoth tusk from the Arctic Circle.

All Blake Lively Had to Do to Get to the Couture Shows Was Ask Anna Wintour to Take Her

Blake Lively, who has said repeatedly she doesn't use a stylist, explains how she wound up at the Chanel and Dior couture shows last season: "I was speaking with Anna Wintour and we were just talking about different fashion houses and I said, 'I love Chanel,' and she said, 'You should come with me to the show.' I also said I loved Dior. She said 'OK, well I'll take you to the Chanel and Dior shows and we'll meet with Karl and John [Galliano] afterwards.' Insane!" [Marie Claire UK via HuffPo]

Scotch & Soda Brings Dutch Style to Soho

Amsterdam-based brand Scotch & Soda landed in Soho last week, bringing an array of tweed blazers, dapper vests, checked button-downs, and fall coats for men and women. This is the company's first U.S. store, as well as the exclusive retailer of the women's collection until January, when the line will launch wholesale.

The clothes call to mind an upgraded Abercrombie & Fitch, with printed tees scribbled in French, casually chic blazers, and distressed sweats. The company takes pride in its craftsmanship, including details like reverse cuffs, embellished collars, subtle beading, and accent hardware. Perhaps our favorite offerings are what the brand calls "value" pieces. In effect, the shop does the styling for you, layering a knit vest and blazer; a men's tee and loose-knit sweater; or a tank top, shirt, and skinny belt, then selling the multiple pieces together as a reasonably priced set. The women's selection offers a welcome mix of cozy cardigans, slouchy khakis, and silks, but we were particularly impressed with the men's offerings: Though S&S can get a bit carried away with the added flair — star-print popped collars, leopard-print pajama bottoms — their blazers and button-downs are well-made staples. Click ahead to see more of what's in store.

Proenza Schouler Wants to Cast Models With ‘Life Experience’ for Their Spring Show

Lindsey Wixson.

Expect to see two types of models on the spring 2011 runways: sexy Lindsey Wixson Lolita types and — wait for it — lanky androgynous girls. Top casting agents tell Cathy Horyn that troops of blank-faced girls are out, and girls with personalities and some curves (though they will still be thin) are in.

Ms. Brokaw and Ms. Gregori-Boina say that clients want models with sensuality plus personality. “I think people are looking for muses, for more than a face and a body,” Ms. Brokaw said. Recalling a meeting recently with the Proenza designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, she said they told her they wanted to see girls with some life experience; maybe they’ve had a boyfriend or traveled a bit. “Things are steering away from the army casting we’ve seen in recent years.”

It's hard to imagine how much that will show on the runway. "Oh, that girl — she was totally just dumped." Maybe designers want to feel like they can hang with their crew backstage instead of having robots they don't want to have speak.

Fashion Week Preview: The Faces [On the Runway/NYT]

Exclusive Video: Model Sara Ziff’s Picture Me Trailer

American model Sara Ziff hit it big in the early aughts with campaigns for D&G and Tommy Hilfiger, several Italian Elle covers, and runway turns for everyone from Balenciaga to Prada. But nowadays, Ziff is on the other side of the lens, along with director and partner Ole Schell. Their first joint venture, Picture Me: A Model's Diary, premieres at the Angelika Film Center on September 17. The documentary takes a rare, insider look at the usually closed-off world of modeling — from the highs of making six figures to the lows of dealing with the industry's physical and emotional pressures.

To build upon the duo's work in Picture Me, Ziff will be reporting exclusively for The Cut throughout New York Fashion Week. Her web miniseries, which we'll post in three installments, will tackle the major themes of the movie: youth, money, and life after modeling. In the meantime, click ahead to watch the exclusive release of the Picture Me trailer, and get psyched up for what's to come.

Slideshow: 100 Designers Reveal Their Spring 2011 Inspirations

We asked 100 designers showing this Fashion Week to give us one exclusive image (plus one word, for good measure) that encapsulates their spring 2011 collections. What we got back ran the gamut from the totally cryptic (ahem, Alexander Wang) to the pretty straightforward (sketches, fabrics, renderings, inspiration boards, and actual shots from the fittings). Ten Models to Watch This Fashion Week

Despite the many faces that flood the modeling industry every season, only a select few make it onto those career-defining runways. So how do you tell a Jablonski from a Van der Vliet from someone who'll be here and gone faster than Naomi Campbell can chuck a BlackBerry? Listen to us. Really. Two years ago, we predicted the rise of both Lancôme face Arlenis Sosa and runway heavyweight Liu Wen; we also saw major potential in Joan Smalls years before she caught on at Gucci, Givenchy, and Vogue. We know what we're talking about here, people.

So after meeting a handful of catwalk hopefuls, chatting with modeling agents, and scouring the resort shows, we compiled a new must-watch list — the future Frejas and Chanels, if you will. Click ahead to see a slideshow of their pretty mugs, and read brief Q&As with each rising star.

Fashion Jews Upset That Fashion’s Night Out Overlaps With Rosh Hashanah

This season's Fashion Week may not interfere with Labor Day, but it directly overlaps with another major holiday observed by quite a few people in the industry. Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Wednesday, September 8, and ends the day Fashion's Night Out begins on September 10. But some fashion Jews don't want Fashion's Night Out on such a major holiday.

"No one would dare ask us to work on Christmas," one fashionably observant Jew snipped.

Nine Designers to Watch This Fashion Week

Of the more than 100 designers showing spring/summer 2011 collections at Fashion Week, there are at least nine worth bookmarking — 'cause if your friends and co-workers aren't raving about 'em now, they will be soon. You see, this lot is fierce with a capital F and plenty of emphasis on the saaah. It includes a Halston trainee, a designer who has made dresses out of toilet paper, and creatives who already count Lady Gaga and Kate Moss among their fans. But don't take our word for it: Click ahead to meet the nine designers yourself, see sketches and samples of their work, and be able to say with confidence that you knew them way back when.

The Ultimate Guide to Lincoln Center

After 17 years at Bryant Park, Fashion Week will stake its claim on Lincoln Center for the first time this month. The move is not without its perks: the mall-like Columbus Circle, a high-low mix of restaurants, proximity to Central Park (you know, if you feel like going for a stroll in those spike heels). But at the end of the day, it’s still the Upper West Side. We’ve charted a map for all your Fashion Week essentials, from booze to Band-Aids. Scroll below to find the top spots in a 15-block radius for free coffee, a wireless hookup, an emergency pair of ballet flats, and a celebratory glass of wine (or, depending on your day, a shot of tequila). Get to know your new week-long stomping grounds.

Dolce & Gabbana on its split with British store Selfridges: “Given the unavailability in Selfridges stores of ideal spaces which could fit with Dolce & Gabbana and D&G brands’ levels and expectations, the group decided to discontinue the distribution of both brands’ collections through the department store. This decision is consistent with the group’s constant work to always ensure the best expression of brand and to preserve its image.” [WWD]

Steve Madden Might End Up Owning Betsey Johnson in 2012

Being in debt feels bad and scary enough, but what do you think it feels like to — instead of owing money to a financial institution — owe money to Steve Madden? Betsey Johnson knows, now that Steve Madden Ltd. has taken over a $48.8 million loan to her company, according to papers filed with the SEC late yesterday. Johnson, whose Fashion Week show is in ten days, has until August 20, 2012 to repay Madden — otherwise he might get her brand. And her stuff.

Best Bet: Nars Pure Matte Lipstick

The sweet blushing pinks and peaches in your makeup palette had their moment this spring. Now, with fall approaching, we're ready to retire the nudes and bring back the power pout. Nars launched a line of six new matte lipsticks this week, forgoing sparkly and sheer glosses in favor of bold, classic color. The standouts of the bunch are the rich, autumnal shades: Vesuvio (on Heather Marks, above), a cherry-red; Terre De Feu, a deep crimson (right); and Volga, a dark, vampy plum. Unlike fickle high-shine lipsticks, these shades stay put all night.

Sparkle Showdown: Milla Jovovich vs. Ali Larter

Photo: Kiyoshi Ota/Getty Images

Milla Jovovich and Ali Larter both wore short, glittery frocks to the Tokyo premiere of Resident Evil: Afterlife. Jovovich chose a gold number with bat-wing sleeves, while Larter opted for a purple frock with a bump-emphasizing belt. In fact, with her sparkle-swathed pregnant belly, it's almost like she's carrying around her own personal disco ball. Both ladies amped up the shine with blingy bracelets, and, in Jovovich's case, a rhinestone-studded clutch.

Who do you think won the battle of the glitter?
